Porsche 911 Targa History
The Porsche 911 Targa was launched as a solution to the increasing safety requirements of open-top cars in North America. Back when the Targa launched, convertibles were taking a lot of heat and many people were asking for a complete ban on convertible vehicles. The Porsche 911 Targa provided many of the benefits found in a convertible including the feeling of freedom that comes with open-top driving, but it had a structure that was more protective of the 911's occupants. Over the years, the 911 Targa changed multiple times, but the biggest change was in the fall of 1993 when the target roll bars, and cloth roof were replaced by a glass roof. This design remained until the introduction of the Porsche 911 Targa 991 which brought back the legendary Targa rollbar.
19 seconds
The Porsche 911 Targa has a truly unique roof that takes just 19 seconds to retract. The dance that comes with the process is mesmerizing with the entire rear glass house lifting up and then sliding back and hanging over the rear of the 911. Two flaps integrated into the roll bar flip sideways during the movement as well. It slots behind the rear seats which can still be used when the top is up or down.
Perhaps the most impressive feature of the Porsche 911 Targa is how it provides the best combination of open-top driving and closed-top comfort. You will have the sun shining squarely down on you and you will feel the wind on your face, but it is also a lot less windy and a lot quieter inside the cabin. This configuration also makes it possible to drive with the roof off for longer, with fall and early spring driving being quite comfortable.
Performance-wise, the Porsche 911 Targa offers about the same level of quickness as an equivalent Porsche 911 convertible. It is offered in Targa 4, Targa 4S and Targa GTS trims, and pricing is identical to the cabriolet trim in each of those model lineups.
