This is my 2024 Macan 4 EV, and I just drove over 1,500km from Edmonton, to my dad’s in Sooke, British Columbia to demonstrate the fantastic road-trip capabilities of the Macan.
To start the trip, I simply inputted my destination, along with my planned stop-overs into the Porsche app. The built-in charge planner seamlessly planned my route and required charge stops for maximum efficiency. I programmed it to ensure I had 15% at minimum at all times so that I could make any pitstops along the beautiful routes.
Starting off from home with a mostly full charge, the first planned charge stop was at the Petro Canada on the west side of Calgary. A quick 15-minute charge had us back on the road. The next stop was an Electrify Canada charger in Golden for another 15 minute stop which took us through Rogers Pass to our overnight rest in Revelstoke.
The following morning, our destination was set to Whistler. The charge planner had our fist stop in Kamloops for an 18-minute charge at another Electrify Canada station. After grabbing lunch while the car topped up, we headed off to Whistler. Along the drive, we were treated to some absolutely stunning views of the Fraser Valley along highway 99, and really got to test the phenomenal handling of the Macan 4 through the winding roads.
An overnight charge at the hotel in Whistler took us down the Sea to Sky highway to the Tsawwassen Ferry south of Vancouver and to our final destination in Sooke on the west side of Vancouver Island.
The drive home had me wanting to push the car and see how far I could drive in a single day, minimizing my stops to get home as quickly as possible. I made the 1400km drive from Sooke to Edmonton with only 4 charge stops, all under 20 minutes. Not bad at all for an 18-hour travel day, and very comparable to the time it would have taken me in a gas-powered Macan.
Now, the big question… How much of a hassle was the EV aspect of my drive. Truthfully, not at all.
Every pit stop where I charged was already a spot where I wanted to stop, be it food, sleeping or just needing a bathroom break.
The fast charging element only added a few minutes to each stop versus a fuel stop, and rather than waiting at the pump while fueling, I could simply plug in my car and go refuel and recharge myself.
After taking my first road trip with an EV, I can wholeheartedly say that it was considerably easier, and faster than I thought it was going to be. The built in charging planning took control of everything and was extremely accurate even through the varied roads and driving conditions of the mountains.
To get behind the wheel of an EV, and move past the fear of range, check out the Macan EV and ask me about it!
