Porsche has introduced the 992.2, the refreshed version of the 992.1, bringing performance upgrades, new technology, and some unexpected changes. While it’s faster and more advanced, it also moves away from some classic 911 elements. If you're wondering whether the newest version is worth the upgrade, here’s everything you need to know.
Performance: More Power, But Heavier
The biggest change in the 992.2 is the introduction of hybrid technology in the GTS trim. The new T-Hybrid powertrain pairs a 3.6-litre flat-six with an electric motor, producing 533 hp and 449 lb-ft of torque. This setup boosts acceleration and improves efficiency, but it also makes the car heavier by 103 pounds.
The base Carrera keeps its 3.0-litre twin-turbo six-cylinder, now with 388 hp thanks to upgrades borrowed from the 911 Turbo. While these changes increase speed, the added weight might impact the driving feel.
Manual Transmission is Gone in the GTS
One of the most controversial changes is the removal of the manual transmission from the GTS model. Porsche now offers only the 8-speed PDK automatic, making it the first time a GTS is not available with a manual option. While PDK is incredibly fast and smooth, many enthusiasts will miss the connection of shifting gears themselves.
Interior: More Digital, Less Analog
Porsche has moved towards a fully digital interior in the 992.2. The classic analog tachometer is gone, replaced by a customizable digital instrument cluster. While this brings more modern features, it removes one of the most iconic design elements of the 911.
Another change is the elimination of the traditional key, now replaced by a start/stop button—which might feel less special to those who enjoy Porsche’s signature left-side ignition switch.
Exterior: Subtle Refinements
Visually, the 992.2 is almost identical to the 992.1, with small updates. The front bumper and headlights have been tweaked, and the air intakes are larger. These changes improve aerodynamics and cooling, but the differences are subtle enough that only die-hard Porsche fans will notice.
Which One Should You Choose?
If you want the most powerful, fastest 911 with the latest hybrid technology, the 992.2 is the better choice. But if you prefer a manual transmission, a traditional tachometer, and a slightly lighter car, the 992.1 might be the better buy.
