Porsche is renowned the world over for its combination of bold aesthetics and spectacular mechanical design, and not just for its automobiles.
For nearly half a century, Porsche has also been producing some of the most covetable timepieces on the market under the Porsche Design umbrella. Founded in 1972 by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the son of Porsche’s founder, Porsche Design continues to infuse Porsche DNA into lifestyle products including but not limited to timepieces.
After birthing arguably the brand’s most iconic automobile, the Porsche 911, F.A. Porsche struck out from the company to form Porsche Design. The sub-brand’s first product was a wristwatch: the iconic Chronograph 1.
As the first fully matte black watch, from strap to casing, designed for optimal readability, the Chronograph 1 took after the dashboards of Porsche’s sportscars and quickly found its way onto the arms of some of the racing world’s as well as Hollywood’s most notable figures.
Some 50 years later and Porsche Design continues the tradition of repackaging its vehicles’ features into gorgeous form-meets-function watches.
While there are literally dozens of Porsche Design wristwatches available in 2020, here are two standout timepieces to consider:
Porsche Design Chronograph 911 Turbo S
Available exclusively to future owners of the 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series sports car, and limited to a run of 500 individually marked pieces, the Porsche Design Chronograph 911 Turbo S is as customizable as the car itself, featuring a winding rotor that mirrors the wheels in a wide variety of colours and trims. The perfect accessory for the new Porsche 911 Turbo S.
Porsche Design Chronograph 911 Speedster
To celebrate the brand’s recent 70th anniversary, Porsche released the new 911 Speedster, which marries retro looks with modern design. To further commemorate the milestone, Porsche Design created a pair of chronographs (the 911 Speedster and the 911 Speedster Heritage Design) exclusively for those who would pilot the new 911 Speedster. The Porsche Design Chronograph 911 Speedster boasts many of the design features present in the car, such as dials that reveal the heritage of the instrument cluster and tachometer of the sports car, as well as a winding rotor colour-coordinated with the car itself. There are only 1,948 units in total, reflecting the year Porsche was founded, each engraved with the limited edition number of the car it’s paired with.
