There’s something big coming from Porsche. And not just big news, but also the largest Porsche to date, literally. We’re talking about the 2019 Porsche Cayenne, which was announced in August. The unveiling of the Turbo, however, the most powerful of the Porsche SUVs, was reserved for the big stage at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show.
We’ve already gone into the details on the base and S models, which combine performance and practicality in such an effective way that it’s made the Cayenne Porsche’s best-selling model. Now let’s get up to speed on the Turbo:
What separates the 2019 Cayenne Turbo from the others is, not surprisingly, that third word in its name, “Turbo.” There are some aesthetic changes like new LED headlamps, a modified front bumper, 21-inch alloy wheels, and twin exhaust pipes, but specifically, it’s the twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine that puts out 550 hp and 576 lb-ft of torque through to the wheels via the 8-speed Tiptronic S transmission that makes the difference. This setup bests the previous-gen by 30 hp, making it the speediest Cayenne ever. To put some figures to it: the 2019 Porsche Cayenne Turbo with the Sport Chrono Package will accelerate from zero to 100kph in 3.7 seconds (3.9 without the package) and maxes out at 287 kph.
Porsche has touted the latest flagship Cayenne as the best of three worlds with “the precision of a sports car, the comfort of a saloon, and the adaptability of an off-road vehicle.” It shares the eight-speed transmission with the AWD Cayenne, and the same 911 genes manifesting themselves as mixed tires and rear-axle steering, but it also adds roll stabilization, Porsche Vectoring Plus system, an adaptive suspension offering six different levels, and 5 drive modes for blacktop and off-road.
Does what many refer to as a ‘grocery getter’ need to be as spunky as a 911 and off-road capable? Ultimately, that’s up to you, but let’s just say your ice-cream will certainly still be frozen when you get home.
