What colour is your dream car?
That’s the question Porsche’s Paint to Sample program asks, and it isn’t just looking for a simple “red” or “bright yellow.” The program allows Porsche enthusiasts to draw inspiration from anywhere and everywhere to identify the perfect colour and finish for their dream vehicle.
Through the Paint to Sample program, Porsche owners can collect any meaningful colour from their day-to-day lives — the rusty yellow of a maple leaf in autumn, or the off white of a modern custom home — and have it recreated and applied to their Porsche vehicle.
Once Porsche has your colour choice, a team of expert colorists begin hand-mixing ingredients until the bespoke pigment is created.
“There’s a lot of development involved in making a new colour,” explains Boris Apenbrink, Director of Exclusive Manufaktur Vehicles at Porsche. “It’s similar to how perfumes are created. The way they mix together ingredients to create a special fragrance is also true for our ‘colourists’. These experts take the tiniest pieces of different ingredients, combining them to make this unique colour.”
From colour selection to application, the process can take up to eight months to complete.
Porsche recognizes and understands that each driver’s colour preferences will be unique and encourages this pursuit of individuality. From the colour replication of a cherished childhood toy to the idyllic hues of the Mediterranean Sea, no colour is off-limits and very few colours cannot be replicated by Porsche’s colorists.
“Colour is something really personal,” adds Apenbrink. “We act as consultants and try to get as close to the wishes of the customer as we can. We want them to be 100 per cent sure. We will never say if a car is good looking or not. We just ask the right questions to guide the customer to their personal dream car.”
