Introducing the Porsche Taycan

The first solely electric Porsche has officially been given a name and is about to be put into production. Meet the 2020 Porsche Taycan, formerly known as the Mission E.

Powering the first all-electric Porsche sportscar are two permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PSMs), similar to those in the 919 Hybrid that took the championship at Le Mans—one drives the rear axle and the other the front. Making a combined 600hp, the twin electric engines launch the Taycan to 100 km/h in under 3.5 seconds and up to 200 km/h in under 12 seconds. All this with a vehicle range of over 500 km without a charge.

Of course, rarely if ever is a Porsche’s merit measured in a straight line. The Taycan, which has recently been spotted testing at the Nürburgring, has a floor-mounted battery pack that allows for a low centre of gravity and plenty of Porsche ability in the corners.

Pronounced “tie-con,” the oriental word translates roughly to “lively young horse,” inspired by the leaping horse on the Porsche crest.

We’ll have more details as they’re released, but if you can’t wait to get behind the wheel of Porsche’s first electric car, you’re not alone. The response to Porsche’s next chapter has been phenomenal. Production of the Taycan begins next year, but until then, check out this video of Adam Levine testing the Taycan in the corners back when it was still known as the Mission E.
