Porsche owners with a vintage or modern classic vehicle know that operating something from another era is a special experience. It’s just you, the machine, the open road and perhaps a stock radio or tape player. There are no infotainment screens, no incoming calls, no navigation. It sounds like bliss, that is, until you realize you actually need and like the conveniences of modern technology.
At Porsche, we realize that adding tech to an older model doesn’t have to ruin the vehicle’s integrity. It can enhance the driving experience and improve safety and comfort along the way. That’s why, in 2020, when Porsche Classic started offering two infotainment system options for vintage and modern classic cars, they were an immediate success.
“There is huge demand for contemporary networking of our timeless classics,” explains Ulrike Lutz, Director of Porsche Classic.
The Porsche Classic Communication Management (PCCM) and Porsche Classic Communication Management Plus (PCCM Plus) are retrofitted units that can control audio, communications and navigation, as well as standard vehicle functions. The system seamlessly fits into a variety of vintage and modern classic Porsche models, taking on the same look and feel of the as other components already installed in the car. Existing Peripheral components, like antennas, speakers or amplifiers continue to work as they did prior to installation. Each PCCM system bears a Porsche logo, too, so it’s obvious that this is an in-house design and not something by a third party.
Essentially, it looks and feels like it was always meant to be there.
The PCCM system is the missing link between vintage and modern classic Porsches and modern tech favourites like Apple CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto™. Through a high-resolution touchscreen, the PCCM systems can perform the same media playback that’s possible in modern Porsches, like maps (which can be displayed in 2D, 3D and basic arrow options), making or receiving phone calls or curating music from a smartphone. Screens are either a 3.5 inch display or a 7 inch display, depending on the radio slot size of the vintage vehicle.
All classic Porsche cars with a DIN-1 or DIN-2 slot can use the PCCM systems, including the following:
- 911 vehicles from the F-Model up to the type 993
- 914, 959, 924, 928, 944 and 968
The PCCM Plus can be fitted on the following:
- Type 996 911 models and type 986 Boxster models
- Vehicles up to model year 2008: 911 (type 997 I), Boxster/Cayman (type 987 I)
- First generation Cayenne (excluded the Porsche 356 and Carrera GT)
