A few weeks ago we traveled from Oakville to California to experience Rennsport Reunion V. For those who don't know, Rennsport is a three day gathering of the Porsche faithful. From casual Porsche fans to hard-core enthusiast to current Porsche motorsport drivers to living Porsche legends, they travel from around the globe to gather, share and experience what it is to be a Porsche fan.
It is difficult to convey the experience of actually being there. I found myself in a sea of Porsches. From 918 hyper-cars, to vintage 550 Spyders and everything in-between. At one point I was surrounded in a field of 911 GT3s. On any other day, if I saw two 918s or two GT3s together, I’d grab my camera/phone and snap away. This weekend I only grabbed my camera if there were more than four 918s together! There were so many GT3s that they all melted into the background.
Porsche had set up a tent filled with over 50 unbelievable legendary and classic vehicles. Porsches that had won Le Mans and others that have found their way into the history books. This alone would have been impressive. What makes this an experience unlike any other is that most of these still race today - and did so over the course of the weekend. Again it is hard to describe the experience of watching a Porsche 917 race past you on the track — oh…the noise and smell…not to mention that it amounts to $20,000,000 worth of history travelling at 100 mph.
I can't think of any automotive brand that could pull something like this off (perhaps Ferrari - but only in Europe). If you aren’t a fan of the brand after experiencing this spectacle - then you have no soul ;)
All fans should put this on their bucket list, you won’t be disappointed. Rennsport Reunion is held about every three years. When the next gathering of the faithful is announced, book early.
