Revive. Restore. Relive.
Porsche Centre Oakville is pleased to be entering a 1987 944 Turbo into the first ever national Classic Restoration Challenge. Our Classic Restoration Team will spend the coming months reviving and restoring this slice of 80s nostalgia with the goal of submitting it for judgement in late summer of 2019.
Porsche Centre Oakville’s own Classic Porsche Technician Nhu Nguyen will be pulling the wrenches, so to speak, with Workshop Foreman Dirk Dunschede lending a hand, and After Sales Director Tom Berger overseeing the project.
The subject of their efforts is a 1987 Porsche 944 Turbo that came to the dealership complete, clean and still running well. The goal is to restore it to showroom condition, and according to Dunschede, one of the main challenges in achieving this will be in knowing when to put the tools down and stop working.
“An artist knows when to stop painting,” says Dunschede, who remembers servicing the 944s back when they were still under warranty. “So I think we need to focus on that right point and not overdo it… It doesn’t need to be flawless, but it needs to be perfect.”
The 944 turbo was renown for its efficient use of turbo and speedy nature. It’s a nostalgic vehicle for anyone who lived through the 80s—you may recall its strong cameo in the era classic Sixteen Candles—but it has an even deeper sentimental value to the Policaro family and to most of the members of the Classic Restoration Team, which is a story for next time.
