Finding and Using a Public Charging Station
With the rise of public charging stations has come the rise of apps to help you find them. Download popular apps like ChargeHub or PlugShare, which tell you where charging stations are, their availability, and the station types.
Once you arrive at a charging station, you can begin charging in three steps.
Step One: Plug in Your EV
When you select your station, plug in your electric vehicle.
Step Two: Pay For Your Session
You’ll be prompted to input payment information if the station you’re using requires payment. You can usually pay through an app or a screen on the charging station via credit or debit card.
Step Three: Charge
Once the payment information has been accepted, your charging session will begin. Many stations can notify you by text to let you know when your charging session is finished.
Which Charging Station Is Right for Your Charging Session?
There are two types of charging stations:
- Level 2 Charging Stations
- Level 3 Charging Stations/DC-Quick Charging Stations
The Level 2 Charging Stations are ideal if you’re going to be in the same for a couple of hours, although you can use them for shorter periods. These stations are often free to use and take several hours to charge your vehicle fully.
The Level 3/DC-Quick Charging Stations are the fastest charging stations available. These are ideal charging stations if you’re short on time or if you’re on a road trip and don’t plan on stopping for very long. Typically, these charging stations do cost a small amount to charge your vehicle.
