Being behind the wheel of a Porsche is often compared to the exhilaration of flying. Enjoy the effortlessness and yet remain in total control. In a few years, driving a Porsche won’t just
feel like flying. You might actually become airborne. An exciting collaboration was recently announced between Porsche and Boeing to explore the premium urban air mobility market and the extension of urban traffic into airspace. In other words, these two leaders in transportation are teaming up to develop a fully electric vehicle with vertical take-off and landing capabilities.
Flying vehicles have been the fascination of the public since the invention of the very first vehicle. Pop culture has elaborated on this fascination dozens of times but with this partnership, a scene like this might be closer than we think.
An international team is currently being assembled to address what Porsche calls “a potential key market segment of the future” through precision engineering, style and innovation. The partnership is built on a Memorandum of Understanding which means they will study the feasibility of the project before committing to a full concept vehicle. But, with the combined resources of two industry leaders like Boeing and Porsche at the helm, a flying Porsche could be in our not so distant future. Aurora Flight Sciences, a subsidiary of Boeing, a pioneer in the unmanned aerial vehicle market and will also work on this project.
No production date has been announced yet although a 2018 study by Porsche Consulting forecasts that the urban air mobility market will pick up speed as early as 2025. Keep your eyes to the skies for any further news but in the meantime, if electric mobility is of interest to you, the earthlier-bound Taycan is available to test drive today at Porsche Centre Saskatchewan.
