The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is heading to Vancouver for 2022, and when the show arrives on the weekend of June 30 through July 2, a new Porsche Taycan Official Safety Car will join the Porsche Formula E team on the track.
The eighth season of the FIA-sanctioned all-electric street racing series will already be well underway when the lights go out on the old ‘90s-era Champ Car circuit around False Creek. This will be the ninth race of a season that will include 15 in total, starting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on January 29, and ending in Seoul, Korea on August 14, forgiving any interruptions. Additional Formula E events will be held in Mexico City, Rome, Monaco, Berlin, Jakarta, New York City, and London (UK).
“We’re proud that Formula E has entrusted a Porsche with this task – one that is important for the safety of its drivers,” says Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President Porsche Motorsport. “With the Taycan Turbo S as the official safety car, we’re making an important contribution to track safety and also underlining the importance of Formula E for Porsche Motorsport.”
The False Creek race track winds along Pacific Boulevard between Griffiths Way and Quebec Street, before coursing down Quebec Street between Pacific Boulevard and Central Street. The grandstands and other viewing areas will have the capacity for 56,000 spectators, so, like the outdoor Indy extravaganza it effectively replaces from 18 years ago, it will be an event you won’t want to miss.
Additionally, the three-day Formula E race weekend will coincide with another important Vancouver event, dubbed Canadian E-Fest. This one-of-a-kind festival has been designed to make sure there’s just as much action off the track as on, including a creative business conference on sustainability, and a major esports tournament. Tickets to the Vancouver event start at $70, and are on sale at the Canadian E-Fest website.
“Formula E is delighted the Porsche Taycan Turbo S will serve as the Championship’s safety car from Season 8,” says Jamie Reigle, CEO of Formula E. “The Porsche Taycan Turbo S is the pinnacle of high-performance electrified vehicles and will light up Formula E city racetracks around the world. In designing the Formula E safety car, Porsche reimagined the critical on-track safety function to be a powerful symbol of the championship’s commitment to an electrified future and the unity of the competitors in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.”
The Formula E Safety Car is based on the 2022 Taycan Turbo S, the most potent variant of Porsche’s four-door coupe EV. The new Turbo S is capable of sprinting from standstill to 100 km/h in only 2.8 seconds thanks to 750 horsepower (with Overboost) and 774 lb-ft of torque when Launch Control is engaged, plus it can also catapult from zero to 160 km/h in a mere 6.1 seconds.
