Porsche's venerable mid-engined sports cars, the 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster, will be all-electric. The success of the all-electric Taycan, the exciting precedent set by the Mission R concept, and Porsche's ongoing design and engineering commitments will culminate into delivering the definitive Porsche dynamic experience in a world class, all-electric drivers car. “In 2025, half of all new Porsche sales are expected to come from the sale of electric vehicles – i.e. all-electric or plug-in hybrid”. Oliver Blume, CEO of Dr. Ind. Hc F. Porsche AG, declared at Porsche’s Annual Press Conference earlier this month. Regarding specific electrification, Blume said “We are stepping up our electric offensive with another model: By the middle of the decade, we want to offer our mid-engine 718 sport car exclusively in an all-electric form.”
Last year, nearly 40% of Porsche’s European deliveries consisted of vehicles that were at least partially electric. In leading-up to Porsche’s intention of carbon neutrality by 2030, the continued development of electrified and all-electric vehicles is a natural step to this honorable goal. Porsche is investing in premium charging stations with industry partners, as well as developing its own charging network for ease of ownership. Further significant investment is being directed to battery systems and sustainable production.
Signs of the electrified future of the 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster can be seen today in the Mission R concept of 2021. Two-electric motors send power to all four wheels and have a maximum output nearing 1,100 Hp in its most aggressive ‘qualifying’ setting. In the Mission R’s ‘race’ mode, it can keep pace with a 911 GT3 Cup – outputting a continuous, efficient, and swift 675 hp. 0-100 km/h is achieved in under three-seconds and top speed exceeds 300 km/h. A focus on lightweight materials and components sees the Mission R weight around 1,500 kg, and the 900-volt batteries implement learnings from Porsche’s successful 919 Hybrid racing programme. The battery system is capable of charging from five to 80-percent SoC (state of charge) in as little as 15 minutes.
“Always our EVs will be 100-percent Porsche, rather than being just oriented to EV competitors.” – Oliver Blume. Porsche continues to boldly charge ahead into an exciting and dynamic future of electrification. Message us to learn more.
