When you rethink the function of something, the form sometimes emerges as if by itself” – this was what drove Ferdinand Alexander Porsche and continues to drive engineers and designers at Porsche Design. In 1972, F.A. Porsche designed and released the Chronograph I. It was the first completely matt black wristwatch with stopwatch function. The black dial, red second hand, luminescent hour marker, and anti-reflective glass were all directly modelled after low-reflection cockpits of Porsche’s contemporary racing cars. It was the little black dress of watches, and served as the first offering from Porsche Design and bridged the gap between automotive and luxury design in splendid fashion.
For the 50th anniversary of Porsche Design, Porsche will be releasing 750 exclusive 911 Targa 4 GTS models paying homage to the iconic designs from F.A. Porsche. Exteriors will be available either in elegant Black or Jet Black Metallic, with platinum Targa bar, ‘Porsche Design’ livery, and Turbo S wheels to elevate contours and surfaces in a chrome-like effect. The interior features Sport-Tex equipment with special leather accents in Black and Slate Grey contrast stitching throughout the cabin and seat belts. The favorite classic check pattern is also available for seats in Black or Cool Grey. Fittingly, the Sport Chrono Package with the Porsche Design Subsecond clock, with small second hand in red, is standard. Details elsewhere include headrests embossed with the ‘Porsche Design 50th Anniversary logo, brushed aluminum door entry guards, and special silver ‘911’ badges with limited edition numbering on the dashboard and ‘F.A.’ Porsche’ signature.
To top things off, buyers also can purchase a special version of the new edition of the Chronograph I from Porsche Design. Limited to 500 units, each watch faithfully harkens to the original Chronograph I with bilingual date display and red second hand, all while introducing modern features such as using the current Porsche Design logo and tachymeter scale for measuring speed in race scenarios.
