Porsche is an automotive brand that evokes passion unlike any other. Its storied catalogue of era-defining cars consistently captivates the imagination and desire of owners the world over, especially its classic models.
As one of the few and exclusive Porsche Classic Partners in Canada, Porsche Centre Victoria is excited to partake in the third iteration of the Porsche Classic Restoration Competition. The competition sees Canadian Porsche Centre dealerships showcase their expertise and Porsche passion by way of fully restoring a classic model's engine, body, brakes, suspension, and interior. 13 dealerships are participating in the 2022-2023 competition, and our expert team is revitalizing a fetching 1981 930 Turbo Coupe.
The Platinum Metallic over beige and brown 911 was first purchased new by Mike Reno, the lead singer of Canadian rock band Loverboy. Though the car was stewarded by a few different owners since, it has spent its entire life on the Canadian west coast ultimately landing on Vancouver Island in autumn 2021. Arriving in our shop with nearly 147,000 km and wearing 964-generation bodywork, there were several areas with slight paint damage. The engine also showed signs of oil leaks in various spots, and it was discovered during disassembly that some of the engine's head studs were broken and numerous aftermarket wiring repairs had been performed in the past. Upon consultation with the current owner, it was decided that the 911 would return to its original condition as best possible, particularly with its drive train.
Following the removal of engine and transmission, the wiring throughout the chassis was extensively repaired, tidied, and replaced with Porsche Classic parts in the case of the aftermarket pieces and fuse boxes. The engine was disassembled to its bare casing so the broken head studs could be replaced, then thoroughly cleaned and carefully resealed. The transmission was tackled similarly to the engine as some slight oil leaks required addressing. While the engine and transmission work was done, the body was sent for paint correction and small surface repairs. Once the body returned to our workshop, it was remarried to its engine and transmission for set-up and tuning, followed by a set of new tires on refinished Fuchs wheels - now painted to match the body - and subsequent alignment.
