Porsche is marking the 25th anniversary of the roadster with the Boxster 25 Years model
The Boxster will always hold a very special place in the Porsche family. Its introduction in the mid-90’s marked a change in Porsche’s model strategy and became the saving grace during difficult economic times. It had the first water-cooled production flat-six engine, and when the concept was also included in the 996 generation 911 (which launched a year after the Boxster), it brought Porsche back to profitable production.
To commemorate the Boxster’s incredible legacy, Porsche launched the limited-edition Boxster 25 Years model in 2021. It is restricted to just 1250 units worldwide and is based on the GTS 4.0 model (718 Boxster GTS 4.0: Fuel consumption combined 10.8 - 9.6 l/100 km). It is powered by a 4.0-litre six-cylinder boxer engine and references a number of design features of the Boxster concept car from the 1993 Detroit Motor Show. It was received so well at the time that the Porsche Executive Board intervened in the ongoing design development of the production model and said to build the car just like the concept model. The production version that launched in 1996 was nearly identical to the original concept.
TRUE BEAUTY KNOWS NO AGE
In addition to the name ‘Boxster’, which is made from combining ‘Boxer’ and ‘Roadster’, the spirit of the Boxster remains unchanged to this day: with high agility thanks to the mid-engined layout, two seats, two luggage compartments, the typical flyline, a horizontally opposed engine with a low centre of gravity and direct responsiveness.
The attractively priced two-seater captured the hearts of new, younger customers right from the start. In terms of looks, it incorporated features of the already renowned history of the brand. The visual appearance of the Boxster concept car shown in Detroit evoked images of the legendary 550 Spyder and the 718 RS 60 Spyder racing car.
To match the style of the historic original, the Boxster 25 Years model combines a Bordeaux leather interior with a red fabric convertible top. The convertible top bears embossed Boxster 25 lettering. Both are also available in Black. An interior package in aluminum, 14-way electrically adjustable sports seats, door sill trims with “Boxster 25" lettering and the heated GT multifunction sports leather steering wheel are just some of the features on the new model’s extended standard equipment list.
PAST AND FUTURE
The special-edition model reaches a top speed of 293 km/h and, in combination with the PDK gearbox and standard Sport Chrono package, sprints from zero to 100 km/h in four seconds. The Boxster 25 Years anniversary model features 20-inch two-tone wheels painted in Neodyme and Silver. Both the colour palette and the wheel design take their inspiration from the Boxster concept study.
Confident in style, it combines its unmistakable lines and design language with references to the very first concept study in 1993. This makes it our homage to the concept of the Boxster – to driving pleasure and feeling forever young.
The Boxster 25th anniversary model builds a bridge from yesterday into today. Inspired by the concept study that marked the beginning of the Boxster era in 1993, the anniversary model continues to be synonymous with unbridled driving pleasure.
Thanks to its high performance and many historical details, this idea burns brighter than ever before – and inspires just as it did on the first day.
