The Porsche 911 Targa has been named Legend Car of the Year at the 2025 News UK Motor Awards, marking its 60th anniversary. First launched in 1965, the Targa introduced a distinctive metal roof roll bar that has become a hallmark of the model. Today, it combines the sleek styling of a coupé with open-top freedom via a fully automatic folding roof that stows behind the rear seats in 19 seconds.
The Targa continues to showcase design cues from the original, including the wide bar replacing the B-pillars, a movable roof panel above the front seats, and a wraparound rear window with no C-pillar. Its rear-mounted flat-six engine delivers the performance and driving dynamics that enthusiasts have come to expect from the 911 range, which also includes coupé and cabriolet models.
Nick Rufford, Motoring Editor at the Sunday Times, said: “There are ordinary convertibles and then there is the Porsche Targa. No other car so beautifully combines the handling of a coupé and the feel of a cabriolet. If there's still such a thing as the joy of the open road, then this car defines it.”
The new 911 Targa 4S and 4 GTS models feature Porsche’s innovative T-Hybrid system, inspired by motorsport. This includes a lightweight electric exhaust gas turbocharger and an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (PDK), boosting power and responsiveness. Combined, the system delivers 541 PS (398 kW) and 610 Nm of torque, supported by all-wheel drive for enhanced traction.
Since its debut at the 1965 IAA Frankfurt Show as a “safety cabriolet with anti-roll bar,” the Targa has continually evolved, establishing itself as a style icon and stand-alone model within the Porsche 911 range. Key milestones include the glass roof of the 1996 Type 993, the integrated powered roof of the 2014 Type 991, and the latest refined mechanism in the Type 992.
For six decades, the 911 Targa has blended open-top driving with coupé practicality, securing its place as one of the most iconic sports cars in automotive history.
