Porsche Taycan Breaks Guinness World Record on Ice
At Porsche Centre South Lakes, we love to see a Porsche pushing the limits, and the Taycan GTS has just done exactly that – setting a new Guinness World Record for the longest continuous drift on ice by an electric vehicle. Porsche Experience instructor Jens Richter piloted the Taycan around an ice track in Lapland, Finland, holding a controlled drift for 132 laps and covering 17.503 kilometres in 46 minutes. Now that’s what we call commitment!
Drifting into the Record Books
The record attempt kicked off on January 14, 2025, but it wasn’t smooth sailing. With the Taycan under extreme loads, the ice surface deteriorated quickly, forcing the first attempt to be abandoned after just 11 kilometres. But Porsche wasn’t about to give up. As temperatures dropped later in the evening, the team switched to shorter spikes on the tyres, making conditions more stable. The result? A flawless second attempt, with Jens keeping the standard Taycan GTS sideways lap after lap, smashing the previous record of 14.809 kilometres.
“With our new Guinness World Records title on ice, the Taycan has once again proven its sideways driving capabilities,” said Jens Richter. “And this time, we did it with all-wheel drive. The fact that the Taycan GTS can be controlled so precisely in extreme conditions speaks volumes about its chassis and balance.”
Record-Breaking Conditions
The attempt took place at the Porsche Arctic Center in Levi, Finland, about 150 km north of the Arctic Circle. The Porsche Experience team set up a 59-metre diameter drift circle on a specially prepared ice track. To ensure precision, a professional GPS system measured the Taycan’s exact distance, while sensors tracked steering, throttle input, and G-forces throughout the attempt. Official Guinness World Records adjudicator Carl Saville was on hand to verify the achievement, presenting the record certificate to Jens Richter and Christian Lehwald, Managing Director of the Porsche Arctic Center.
“We love pushing boundaries,” said Christian Lehwald. “With the Taycan GTS, we had the perfect combination of power and control to take on this challenge – and we delivered.”
The Taycan’s Growing List of Records
This isn’t the first time the Taycan has made history. With this latest record, Porsche’s all-electric sports car now holds four Guinness World Records titles:
- 2023: The Taycan Cross Turismo tackled the Xinjiang-Tibet route, setting the record for the greatest altitude change by an EV (5,573 metres).
- 2021: Racing driver Leh Keen hit 165.1 km/h in a Taycan inside an exhibition hall in New Orleans, securing the title for the fastest speed driven inside a building.
- 2020: Porsche Experience instructor Dennis Retera completed 210 laps at the PEC Hockenheimring, drifting a Taycan for 42.171 km in 55 minutes – the longest EV drift on tarmac.
Porsche Ice Experience – Where Legends Are Made
The Porsche Ice Experience has been putting drivers to the test in Finnish Lapland since 1996. Over 1,500 participants take part every year, training on snow and ice tracks while experiencing Porsche’s legendary handling in extreme conditions. For the 2025 season, renowned track designer Hermann Tilke has completely revamped the circuit, making it the ultimate winter driving challenge.
What’s Next?
With four world records to its name, the Taycan continues to prove that electric doesn’t mean boring. Whether it’s smashing speed records or sliding sideways on ice, Porsche’s all-electric sports car is redefining what’s possible.
What’s next? We can’t wait to find out!
