Wireless charging has already transformed the way we power our smartphones, simply place the device on a cradle, and charging begins. Now, Porsche is set to bring that same convenience to electric vehicles. The company will become the first automaker to introduce an 11 kW inductive charging system with a compact, one-box base plate design ready for market use. With this setup, only a floor-mounted plate is required in the parking space, eliminating the need for a separate wall box or external control unit.
The upcoming all-electric generation of the Cayenne will be the first Porsche model series available with the new vehicle-side inductive charging technology. Starting in 2026, the floor mounted charging plate will be available for purchase at Porsche Centres and through the Porsche Online Shop. At the IAA Mobility show in Munich, a prototype featuring fluorescent paint offers a glimpse into the innovative system. The world premiere of the Cayenne Electric is scheduled for late 2025.
"Ease of use, suitability for everyday use and charging infrastructure are still the decisive factors when it comes to the acceptance of electric mobility," says Dr. Michael Steiner, Deputy Chairman and Member of the Executive Board, Research and Development. "We are proud that inductive charging will soon be available in series production at Porsche. Charging an electric car at home has never been so easy and convenient."
With a maximum charging capacity of up to 11 kW, Porsche’s contactless charging system matches the performance of traditional wired AC charging. The system delivers impressive efficiency as well, transferring up to 90 percent of the energy from the power grid directly to the vehicle’s battery.
Inductive Charging Poised to Transform EV Infrastructure
According to a recent analysis by Porsche, approximately 75 percent of charging sessions for its all-electric vehicles occur at home, highlighting the strong potential for inductive charging solutions. Porsche’s user-friendly Wireless Charging system features a compact floor plate (measuring 117 x 78 x 6 cm) that can be installed in garages, carports, or outdoor parking spaces and connected directly to the power supply. As with other home charging solutions, customers can opt for the Porsche Installation Service, which includes professional setup and commissioning by a certified electrician.
To enable wireless charging, specific hardware must also be installed on the vehicle. The upcoming Cayenne Electric will be the first Porsche model series available with the optional Porsche Wireless Charging pre-installation and vehicle-side receiver plate. This receiver unit is securely housed in the underbody between the front wheels, protected from road debris and weather conditions. To initiate charging, the Cayenne simply needs to be parked over the inductive floor plate. Energy is then transferred wirelessly across a gap of just a few centimetres. For optimal alignment, the vehicle automatically lowers itself during the process. To ensure safety, the floor plate features motion detection and foreign object recognition. Charging is automatically paused if a person or animal enters the area, or if a metallic object is detected and begins to overheat.
Porsche Wireless Charging is fully integrated into the My Porsche app, enabling users to track charging activity and manage access for multiple vehicles. A specialized display within the Surround View parking system assists drivers in accurately positioning the Cayenne over the charging plate for optimal alignment. Once the vehicle is correctly aligned over the floor plate and the parking brake is engaged, charging begins automatically, no further action is required from the driver. Familiar convenience features from AC charging, such as scheduled charging with climate preconditioning, are also supported.
Weighing around 50 kilograms, the inductive floor plate is equipped with LTE and WLAN connectivity as standard, allowing for over-the-air software updates and ongoing infrastructure support. Porsche Wireless Charging is set to launch in Europe in 2026, with plans to expand to other international markets thereafter.
Weatherproof and extensively tested
The Porsche Wireless Charging base plate is engineered for use both indoors and outdoors, with all live components fully protected against rain, snow, and other environmental factors. It is robust enough to endure being driven over without significant damage. During charging, electromagnetic emissions are confined to the vehicle’s underbody, ensuring safe operation. The system’s durability and safety have been rigorously tested and certified by TÜV Süd. Furthermore, the floor plate complies with CE and UL standards, meeting safety and environmental regulations throughout the EU and the United States.
