The 21st season of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia has ended with an entertaining weekend at the Shanghai International Circuit.
Young, talented and strong performing driver, Alessandro Ghiretti claimed the Overall title, Bao Jinlong who celebrated his 10-year anniversary competing in the series claims this season’s Pro-Am title winner and Eric Kwong, a passionate driver who claimed many wins throughout the season, was named the Am champion. Team Jebsen, a dealer team who has been with Porsche Carrera Cup Asia since the series commencement, took home this season’s Dealer Trophy.
Wet weather hit Shanghai for most of the weekend, testing the drivers to the limit on the slippery surface. Several drivers struggled in the wet conditions, with a number of cars leaving the track surface, particularly at the heavy braking zone down at Turn 6.
Team Shanghai Yongda BWT’s Dylan Pereira came into the event as an outsider for the title but made the perfect start by taking pole position for Round 14. The rain remained steady for Round 15 on Sunday morning, with Ghiretti on pole this time around. The 2024 Porsche Junior led from the front, as Pereira made the move on Gilchrist to take second.
The final event of the season, the extended Endurance Cup race, was run in cooler, drier conditions. Pereira and Jaubert lined up on the front row, but the pair came to blows at Turn 2, allowing Ghiretti to sneak through into the lead. While the rain was gone, the track remained greasy and slippery, catching out several drivers in the opening laps.
Shanghai International Circuit is China’s most famous racetrack, thanks to its hosting of the Chinese Grand Prix. The 5.451-kilometre layout is notable for the extremely long back straight, the 1.2km stretch that separate Turns 13-14 along with the snail-like Turns 1-4, which wind in on themselves before releasing the cars into the rest of the lap, making the racetrack an even tougher challenge during the rainy conditions.
